Military: Enlisted in the military service during the first year of the war with Great Britain in 1812, and served until 1814, when, from disability, he obtained a furlough from his captain (Jack) at Mansfield, and continuing physically unable, he did not return to the service.

Biography: Jacob Reed was a native of Ireland, and with his brother, Andrew, came to America prior to the war of the Revolution. In that heroic struggle Jacob served as a teamster, and Andrew as a brave soldier in the ranks. After the close of the war Jacob settled in Chester county, Pa.; later removed to near Greensburg, in the western part of Pennsylvania, while Andrew settled in Virginia.
